Bringing to life the painter’s art for ARTE’s documentary, as part of the Grand Palais exhibition.

Art Direction / 3D / Motion design / Postproduction / Project Management

Ambitious painter, draftsman and brilliant poster designer, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, friend of Van Gogh and inspired by Degas and Manet, chronicled his time with an insatiable greed. The refined aristocrat, cluttered with a handicap and an unsightly body, excelled in art at an early age to impose his resolutely modern style. Eager for everything, this genius of the line, who frequents artists and intellectuals, captures on the spot, and with panache, the heartbeats of Parisian life and the Montmartre scene at the end of the century, capturing faces and bodies in movement in bold frames, while cinema and photography are invented. From the cabarets of Pigalle to the brothels, this caustic and provocative observer casts a look full of passion and humanity at the women he meets. Reinventing lithography, this precursor of the avant-garde of the 20th century also paved the way for modern advertising.

The painter of the human condition.
Immersing itself in the profound and prolific work – despite a short life (1864-1901) – of Toulouse-Lautrec, this documentary retraces the journey of a visionary artist with fierce freedom, master of self-mockery, who sketched with tender compassion workers and girls of light morals, to better reveal, behind the whirling festivals and sequins, the immense solitude of the human condition.

A film directed by Gregory Monro.

88 postproduced shots were made by BLD for this 52min documentary.
